Spotting Codependency Patterns in Relationships: Are You Struggling to Balance Your Own Needs with Caring for Others?

May 10, 2024

Codependency Patterns - Atlanta Specialized Care

Many of us fall into codependency patterns in our close relationships without realizing it. Codependency refers to relying on another person for happiness, self-esteem, and identity.

In codependent relationships, we tend to prioritize the needs of others over our own, often in an unhealthy way. We may make excuses for a partner’s harmful behavior, take responsibility for their emotions and actions, or go to great lengths to please and care for them.

Recognizing Codependency Patterns

Codependency patterns develop for many reasons, including childhood experiences, low self-esteem, and the desire to feel loved or needed. The first step to changing codependent patterns is recognizing the signs in yourself through honest self-reflection. Ask yourself:

  • Do I feel distressed or responsible when my partner is upset? Do I make excuses for their unhealthy behavior?
  • Do I have trouble saying no or setting boundaries? Do I take on more than I can handle to please others?
  • Do I rely heavily on the approval and praise of others? Is my self-esteem conditional on what others think of me?
  • Do I feel responsible for my partner’s happiness and well-being? Do I drop everything to help others even when it’s not in my best interest?
  • Do I have trouble expressing my needs or feelings in my relationships? Do my wants and needs come second?
  • Do I feel guilty when I practice self-care? Does putting myself first feel selfish or problematic?

The truth is, you matter. Your needs, wants, feelings, and happiness matter. While caring for others is important, it should not come at the expense of yourself.
