TOVA Testing in Atlanta & Alpharetta

Objective, scientifically validated measurements for ADHD assessment and treatment evaluation.

What is the TOVA Test?

The Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA) is a laboratory-grade, FDA-cleared computerized neuropsychological assessment used to measure attention and inhibitory control. While traditional ADHD evaluations often rely on rating scales from parents, teachers, or the patient, this computerized attention test gives our clinicians objective baseline data.

Presented as a simple, non-language-based task, the assessment tracks how a person responds to visual or auditory stimuli over a set period. It is an important part of our diagnostic process, helping us distinguish ADHD-related patterns from other issues that can affect focus, including anxiety, sleep deprivation, and learning differences.

The Five Variables of Attention

Our clinicians analyze five critical variables to build a clearer picture of attentional functioning. These measures show how the brain handles sustained focus, timing, and response control under low-stimulation conditions.

Inattention (Omissions)

Missed targets, often associated with lapses in attention during repetitive tasks.

Impulsivity (Commissions)

Responses to non-targets, reflecting difficulty with inhibition and self-control.

Consistency (Response Time Variability)

Changes in reaction time across the test, often one of the most useful indicators of attentional regulation.

Processing Speed (Response Time)

How quickly the nervous system responds correctly to a stimulus.

Perceptual Sensitivity (D-Prime)

The ability to separate relevant information from distraction.

Supporting Your Path to Clarity

Objective ADHD testing can be especially helpful when symptoms, treatment response, or documentation needs are not fully clear.

  • Seeking an initial ADHD diagnosis
  • Monitoring medication effectiveness
  • Evaluating symptoms that have not improved with treatment
  • Adjusting school IEP or 504 plans
  • Addressing workplace productivity concerns
  • Differentiating ADHD from anxiety or depression
  • Establishing a baseline before treatment
  • Supporting academic accommodation documentation

Why We Use TOVA Testing

We use this form of ADHD testing to add objective data to the clinical picture.

Objective Diagnostic Aid

No single test can diagnose ADHD on its own. We use this assessment alongside clinical history, symptom checklists, and interviews to add an objective data point to the evaluation. That helps support a more reliable, evidence-based diagnosis.

Medication Monitoring

This test is especially useful for tracking change over time. By comparing baseline results with follow-up performance, we can see whether treatment is improving attention, response control, and consistency and use that information to refine your care plan.

Performance Validity

For adolescents and adults, the assessment includes built-in measures that help confirm whether results are a credible reflection of actual attention and effort. This can support accurate documentation for school or workplace accommodations when appropriate.

Your Testing Journey

Your assessment is conducted in person at our Atlanta or Alpharetta office. While the active test takes about 22 minutes, you should plan for a one-hour visit to allow time for instructions, practice, and setup.

We believe follow-through matters. Within a few days of testing, your results will be reviewed with you during a scheduled Zoom consultation. You will receive a written summary with clinical findings and personalized recommendations for home, school, or work. The cost for this evaluation is approximately $250.

FAQs about Medication Management in Atlanta & Alpharetta

What is the TOVA test?

TOVA is a computerized attention test used as part of a broader ADHD evaluation. It measures attention, timing, and inhibitory control, but it is not a standalone diagnostic tool.

What is the TOVA test for ADHD?

It is used to provide objective performance data that can support clinical decision-making during an ADHD assessment. Clinicians review the results alongside interviews, symptom history, and other measures.

How does the TOVA test work?

The assessment presents visual or auditory stimuli over a fixed period. The patient responds to target items and withholds responses to non-targets, allowing clinicians to measure focus, impulsivity, and consistency.

What does the TOVA test measure?

It measures omissions, commissions, response time, response time variability, and perceptual sensitivity. Together, these variables help show how attention is functioning.

How long is the TOVA test?

The active portion takes about 22 minutes, though most appointments last around one hour in total.

How much does a TOVA test cost?

The cost of this evaluation is approximately $250, including testing, clinical review, and a written summary.

How accurate is the TOVA test?

It is a scientifically validated tool that provides objective data, but no single ADHD test can confirm a diagnosis by itself. Accuracy is strongest when results are interpreted as part of a full clinical evaluation.

What happens during a TOVA test?

You will receive instructions, complete a short practice period, and then take the computerized test in the office. The task is intentionally simple and repetitive so clinicians can observe sustained attention and response control.

At what age can a person take the TOVA?

We offer testing for children as young as age 4 and for adults through age 80+. Preschool-aged patients complete age-appropriate formats.

How should I prepare for the test?

To support accurate results, we may recommend avoiding caffeine and nicotine on the day of testing. If a baseline measure is needed, you may also be asked to avoid ADHD stimulant medication that morning.

Does insurance cover this testing?

While Atlanta Specialized Care is not in-network with insurance plans, we’re happy to provide a mental health superbill for eligible services if you would like to pursue possible out-of-network reimbursement. Many patients use this documentation to submit claims directly to their insurance carrier, depending on their plan’s benefits.

Will I be able to get medication after this test?

This assessment can provide helpful objective data, but it does not automatically result in a prescription. Medication decisions depend on your full clinical evaluation, symptoms, history, and provider judgment. If medication is appropriate, the next step may include support through our medication management services.
