Can I See the Same Therapist for Depression and Anxiety Counseling?

Anxiety Counseling Depression

Suffering from depression and anxiety can be difficult and distressing. People of all ages deal with depression and or anxiety, but many don’t realize that the two are very closely connected. Research shows that up to 60% of people with depression also experience anxiety, and 50 to 70% of those with anxiety tend to become depressed. Both disorders share similar causes, symptoms, and treatments.

If you suffer from both depression and anxiety and are in search of treatment and relief for these co-occurring disorders, and don’t know where to start, or are wondering if you need to see different specialists to treat both, the good news is that licensed therapists for counseling are trained to treat both depression and anxiety.

When licensed psychiatrists, psychologists, and counselors receive their education and training, they become trained to treat mood and anxiety disorders. A study in the Journal of Affective Disorders showed that around 80% of psychotherapists surveyed reported frequently treating clients with anxiety and depression. A knowledgeable therapist will have access to evidence-based techniques usually used to alleviate symptoms for both conditions. Trained and licensed therapists will be able to identify connections between your anxiety and depression to provide a comprehensive treatment plan to ease symptoms and, over time, will teach you techniques to notice these symptoms before they get out of hand and become paralyzing.

When struggling with co-occurring disorders, continuity of care from the same therapist is essential, as over time, it will allow them to understand your challenges fully, what has worked well and what hasn’t, and what needs to be changed or tweaked. The Journal of Clinical Psychology literature review stated that “an ongoing relationship with one therapist allows for the development of trust and a strong therapeutic alliance, which research consistently shows leads to better outcomes” (Constantino, Castonguay, & Schut, 2002). Over time, your therapist will assist in adjusting medications based on your progress and needs.
