Medication Management: What Does It Really Mean to Me?

December 9, 2021

Medication Management

There is a lot of misinformation out there about “medication management” and what it is or is not. When it comes to mental health, medication management is the practice of assessing symptoms that an individual may be experiencing and prescribing the appropriate medication that will assist the brain in doing what it may not be doing on its own.

There are many reasons that a brain is not doing what it should be doing. Pathways may not be connected. Chemicals called neurotransmitters may not be produced by the body as needed, thereby impacting the passage of electrical impulses.

Medication is not a magic bullet in mental health, but it can bridge the gap. Research tells us that the combination of medication and counseling usually creates the best outcomes, rather than medication alone.

Why Is Medication Management Important in Mental Health?

Pursuing medication management as an adjunct to your counseling therapy is not a sign of a “character flaw.” Mental health challenges are not about the individual’s character but are rather about inherent body chemistry. Sometimes things stop working neurologically because of the stress of life circumstances; other times, a condition is brought on by other organic causes or genetics.

These chemical and biological issues can begin to be successfully addressed through medication management. Gene testing is available at many practices, like here at Atlanta Specialized Care, to figure out which medication your body may respond to best.

Many of those who start medication are only on it for a period of time. The brain works like a car battery: You get the right medication, at the right dosage, for the right amount of time, and the brain is back up and running when you titrate off.
