The Mental Health Connection: Boundaries as a Tool for Healing and Growth

April 29, 2024

Mental Health

For this installment in our ongoing collaboration with the Aha! Connection, our Licensed clinical social worker and therapist, Neitcha Thomsen, discusses the importance of setting healthy boundaries for parents and families supporting a loved one with mental health challenges. Neitcha points out that according to NAMI, 50% of all lifetime mental illnesses begin at age 14, and 75% begin by the age of 24.

Parents play an intricate role in support and recovery during this critical transition into adulthood. However, it can be difficult for parents to set appropriate boundaries, and they may enable unhealthy behaviors in an attempt to help. Neitcha outlines some challenges to setting boundaries, as well as common mistakes parents can make.

Working with a therapist and connecting with other parents in a similar situation can help provide the support and guidance needed to establish healthy boundaries. After all, boundaries are key to communicating clear expectations and showing belief in the young adult’s ability to meet those expectations. Learning these skills, though they may be difficult, is a crucial part of the recovery process.
